Bettie’s By-line

Our social meeting in Bay City turned out to be a fine time. Dolores Maillette was the hostess and really had the afternoon planned. We started at the Lantern Restaurant for a very filling and good buffet. From there, most of us walked to the location of the Tall Ships. What a sight! The city had everything very well organized, which helped us enjoy the day. If you were not there, you missed a great time.

For those of you who were not in Bay City, the following are brief items of news:

  • Jan Roy lost her mother in early July, and Barbara Grooter lost her son about the same time.

  • Virginia Maitland has had eye surgery and is recuperating at home.

  • Dorothy Marsh was in the hospital with heart problems and is also recuperating.

  • Dorothy Marsh reports that the lap robes given to the Ann Arbor VA hospital are very much sought after by the patients. A new emergency medical form is being passed out. Our records are outdated. In case of an emergency, we need to know whom to contact and what medication you might need. We have had trouble locating and communicating with families in case of illness or death. Please inform next of kin that you belong to WAVES National and give them

names of members to call should they be needed. (See front page of SHORELINES.)

I hope to see all of you at the All Service Women’s Luncheon. The flyer did not mention it, but the speaker will be Lt.Gen Carol Mutter, USMC (Ret).

Anyone who went through Bainbridge will want to know that the USNTC Bainbridge reunion will be held October 3-5 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is open to all military and civilian personnel who served there from 1942-76. Contact: Sue Fischer, PO Box 2313, Westminster, MD 21158.

Marion Grattan has planned the October 20 luncheon. It will be at the Jackson Brewing Company. See you there if not at the ASWL in September.

Late Flash: Ruth Gaerig reports that Karen Fussell is in the VA Hospital in Battle Creek. She will be there for a month or two. Send cards to: Karen Fussell, VA Medical Center—Women’s Ward, 5500 Armstrong Road, Battle Creek, MI 49016 -Bettie

Michigan State Fair

Jan Roy and Bettie Johnson attended Armed Services Day at the Michigan State Fair. Following a concert by the Motor City Brass, a wreath was laid at the Veterans Monument and the name of the “Veteran of the Year” announced. Bettie said she is hoping for a larger delegation next year by publicizing the event earlier.
