Happy
spring! It was a cold hard winter in most parts of our country so I hope that
you have thawed and that the flowers are blooming!
In this issue you will find the bylaws amendments that will be presented and voted on during our 25th Anniversary WAVES National Convention in Philadelphia in August. You will also see the biographies for those running for a national office. A national officer is defined as President, 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Recording Secretary and Treasurer. The June White Caps will feature the photos of those running for a national office along with her biography, once again. Please read each bio carefully and be sure to VOTE in June. There are three candidates for the office of 2nd Vice President and two candidates for Recording Secretary. I wish we had at least two candidates running for each and every national office! A Leadership Workshop will be held for Unit Presidents, State Directors and Regional Representatives during our convention in Philadelphia, PA. This workshop will answer questions you might have regarding reports that are due, who can hold an office (and for how long), bylaws, the Procedures Manual (PM), recruiting, etc. Be sure to bring your copy of the bylaws and PM to convention. You should have received your Call to Convention by now. Every special consideration has been taken into account for those requiring special diet needs to those who may need a special room. There is even a special tour set up for those who may need a little extra time getting on and off of a bus or who may not be able to walk a long distance. Were you a Chief in the Navy or Coast Guard during WW II, Korea, Vietnam or in peace time before women were initiated as Chiefs? Jo Adamson and Barbara Hawley are arranging for those who were Chief's, but never initiated, to be initiated in Philadelphia, PA. The initiation won’t be on a large scale or take forever, and you probably won't have to eat or drink anything that you don't recognize or that may smell bad! But, you will have the opportunity to be initiated and you will be recognized! If you are an initiated Chief and would you like to help, please contact Barbara. This will be a closed event to include only those going through initiation or those initiated Chiefs that would like to help. |
Contact Barbara Hawley, 42 Coe Street, Winsted, CT 06098-1004, (860) 379-8705 or e-mail Barb: Barbara.Hawley@ct.usda.gov if you would like to be included in this Chiefs initiation. BRING YOUR UNIT BANNER to convention. The Wyndham Philadelphia Hotel is encouraging us to bring a banner to hang in the lobby area during the entire week of our convention. This is NOT the unit Flag; this is a banner that will be hung from the various available areas in the three story lobby. Let's show our WAVES National pride to Philly in August!! Make sure that the banner has grommets along the top edge and bring some nylon string to hang them up with. The future of WAVES National is in your hands. We chartered a new unit (#153), as reported in the January issue, but are dangerously close to losing other units. I have said over and over again that the average age of our membership is advancing and many units are shrinking at a rapid rate. I realize that recruiting is difficult and that many of the "younger" ladies don't have time due to working full time and having families to take care of. I don't believe that the founders of WAVES National or you, our members want to see WN come to an end. You must work a little harder to recruit members. Contact your local VA office to see if you can put an article in one of their publications, or if they are willing to give you the list of women veterans in your area. Write an article about WN and submit it to each and every American Legion Post, VFW Post, Navy League or like veterans group in your area, and ask them to include the article in their newsletters. Be persistent! If you don't see your unit article in the Foam Off the WAVES, make sure that you are copying both Ida Duffy and me when you submit it. God bless our troops
and God bless America! Always Navy,
