WEBFOOT
Unit # 46 (OR) - 2003 was a busy year
for this unit. April’s garage sale and
potluck was very successful, and the
flag project was completed. The unit
gave flags to every classroom in the 3
counties that the unit covers. Magazine
subscriptions were sent to the Oregon
Veterans home. Sweaters and caps
knitted by Mary Stone, who died in April
– were donated to the Roseburg American
Legion Christmas Gift Shop.
Valentines were sent to patients earlier
in the year. Local veterans sponsored
Memorial Day in Grants Pass, and Unit
# 46 was included in the program. A
potluck picnic in the park, held in
August, at the White City Domiciliary for
the women veterans living there. Several
members attended the Coastal
Women’s Picnic at Honeyman Park in
Florence (July) and the State Meeting in
Springfield, OR (September). December
found the unit members collecting
canned and boxed foods for the Grants
Pass Vietnam Veterans, and 15 baskets
given at Christmas to veterans and their
families. Gifts and food baskets were
also delivered to three needy families in
the Medford area by the unit.
BOISE VALLEY WAVES
Unit # 47 (ID) – February 12th, the unit
meeting was held as a makeup due to
January’s winter weather. The membership
was informed of the $50.00
donation and thank you reply from the
Portsmouth, VA Naval Hospital. The
donation was for the commemoration,
in stained glass, for the women who
served in the WAVES during WWII.
The unit joined with the Idaho Women’s
Veterans Org. to present a potluck
luncheon and gift certificates for each
of the women veterans in Idaho State
Veterans Home as a Christmas present.
The unit has also made a donation
to the Women Veterans Memorial,
which will be placed in the Idaho State
Veterans Cemetery, to be dedicated
July 15, 2004. |
FINGER LAKES
Unit # 49 (NY) - Unit members attended
a Legislative Breakfast in the Finger
Lakes area. It outlined some of what the
legislators are doing on behalf of NY veterans.
A very interesting speaker talked
about “Nursing during the Civil War” at
the February meeting. The unit now
understands why the death rate was so
high for that war.
NORTHWEST FLORIDA
WAVES
Unit # 52 (FL) – A guest speaker from
Relay for Life, an organization of cancer
survivors, spoke at the January meeting.
The unit donated $100 and a member
donated another $25, to sponsor a
unit sign during the relay. Fifty dollars
was also donated to St. Joseph’s Free
Clinic that treats indigent people. The
Service Officer from American Legion
Post #240 spoke at the February meeting
about VA benefits and other pertinent
benefits and information.
GULF COAST DOLPHINS
Unit # 56 (FL) – The unit will celebrate
their 16th Anniversary in July. Several
interesting speakers have presented
many great topics. One - a graduate of
the Sarasota Military Academy is now
attending the Citadel. The unit presented
her with a check to help her achieve
the high goals she has set for herself.
The unit had a busy November - an invitation
to ride in the Sarasota Veterans
Day parade on the 11th and the All
Women Veterans luncheon on the 23rd.
A good turnout was reported for each
event. The unit is reaching completion
of 2004 dues. The unit collects Christmas
cards for a member, who sent out
over 400 this last year to the men and
women in the Armed Forces overseas.
Several letters, in return, add interest to
the meetings. Two members have been
honored by submitting their names to
be added to the roll at WIMSA. In February,
eight members of the unit took
part in the dedication of the Douglas T.
Jacobson State Veterans Nursing
Home in Port Charlotte, FL. An ongoing
program for the unit is to collect
books for their library. |
SAND DOLLAR
Unit # 60 (FL) – The annual Bay Pines
Volunteer Awards Program was held
March 31st at the Harborview Center in
Clearwater. We will, again this year,
sponsor a Student Volunteer at Bay
Pines Medical Center. In lieu of the
annual Christmas donation to a charity,
$50.00 was donated to Bay Pines
towards activities & gifts distributed to
hospitalized veterans during National
Salute to Hospitalized Veterans, held the
week of February 14th. At the end of the
Feb. 20th meeting, WAC Unit # 69 joined
us for a Video showing that they had
made of four of their service women,
who were interviewed by a representative
at Pinellas 18, Pinellas County Television.
The film was very interesting and
greatly enjoyed by all.
WAVES AGO
Unit # 61 (TX) - The unit lost Mary Carden
in January. The unit participated in
the flag services to the family. Valentines
were sent to the Veterans Hospital. Aunit
member had her children’s school create
Valentines for veterans at the out-patient
clinic for distribution. For February, the
unit had a pancake breakfast and
recalled romances they had in the service
or their marriage while in the military.
For March (Women’s History Month) a
book was donated to the library on
women test pilots, engineers and astronauts.
Adisplay of servicewomen will be
put on display at the library.
MICHIANA TIDAL WAVE
Unit # 63 (IN) – December found members
going to the Indiana Veterans Home
to conduct a program for the residents.
They showed a video of the launching of
the new Coast Guard Cutter SPAR in the
fall of 2000. A Christmas party was also
held for the lady veterans of the home.
The annual Christmas luncheon was
held at Grand Empire International Buffet
in Mishawaka, IN. The unit is now ready
to start the New Year!
ATLANTIC SHORE
Unit # 66 (FL) – The unit met the 21st of
February with 15 members present. The
speaker was a professor from the local
college who spoke on Astrology and
stars, with emphasis on Orion, the |
