assisted by Kathryn Malter and Bob Cahall. Bob’s help is very much appreciated for his help to the unit.

Mrs. Davis spoke to the unit about the “Council on Aging”. Everyone picked up some good pointers on this “growing old”.

JERSEY SHORE WAVES

Unit # 68 (NJ) - Nine members of the Unit 68 and one friend, attended the N.J. Advisory Comm. for Women Veterans' Ceremony dedicating the Women

Veterans Monument erected in Brigadier General William C. Doyle

Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown, N.J.  The designer of the statue "Minute Woman” was Dorothy Dempsey, a member of one of the 4 N.J. Units.  The keynote speaker was Brigadier General Wilma L. Vaught, USAF (Retired).  Brigadier General Glenn K. Rieth, Adjutant General of the N.J. Dept. of Military & Veterans Affairs also spoke.  A goodly number of veterans (male & female) attended and the day was one of the few sunny ones that N.J. has enjoyed lately.

ORANGE BLOSSOM

Unit # 69 (FL) – Welcome aboard to Donna McKiernan, a Vietnam era Yeoman who had been stationed in Naples, Italy, Hawaii and Norfolk, VA. Sadly, this April we lost Beverly L. Taylor. She was a charter member, unit secretary and WWII veteran Storekeeper. Unit members, who also sang “WAVES of the Navy”, presented the flag to her family, and gave a tribute eulogy. Beverly’s spirit and enthusiasm will be sorely missed.

COLUMBIA RIVER RIPPLES

Unit # 70 (OR) – The unit collects manufacturer’s coupons for our service men and women at the Navy base in Yokosuka, Japan. The last box weighed 8 lb. 6 oz., and all of the coupons WN members send are gratefully received. Memorial Day, Merrily Hewett and Freddie McBride carried the colors for the Memorial Day Services at Willamette National Cemetery. There was a larger than usual number of people attending,

and they joined in singing all of the
patriotic songs. The flyover was enthusiastically cheered.

REDWOOD EMPIRE WAVES

Unit #77 (CA) – Women veterans are honored every year by American Legion Post #21 in Santa Rosa. A record attendance of 50 was present for the ceremony, which was inaugurated 17 years ago by unit member, Morella Staggs. The Redwood Empire WAVES looked sharp and provided the largest group of attendees. The unit posts colors for the monthly memorial services at the Yountville Veterans Home. The unit will join the resident women veterans in the cafeteria for the annual August lunch date.

PIONEER VALLEY WAVES

Unit # 81(MA) - Annual picnic was held at Carolyn Prunier's home in Turners Falls, MA on Saturday, July 19th. The usual picnic fare was replaced this year with Seafood Delights--a clambake. The unit had a great year under President Carolyn Prunier, a Korean Veteran of the WAVES. September, the unit had Stephen Sossaman, Vietnam Army veteran as speaker. Stephen, a Columbia University graduate is an English Professor at Westfield College. In November, the WAVES 60th Anniversary was celebrated with Dassa Carvey, WN Public Relations Chairman as speaker. A Korean Army veteran and quartet of young people entertained at the Christmas party. March’s speaker was Linda Abrams, Air Force Veteran, who has an article in the Readers Digest regarding her work with DNA help in finding missing military personnel. May’s speaker was Tu Mach, a Nursing Student at University of Mass. She spoke of her family's history and emigrating from Vietnam. She also taught us how to do Origami peace cranes.

HIGHLANDERS

Unit # 88 (FL) – The unit made donations to Angle Flight, Sea Service Museum, Avon Park NJROTC, Sun Room Senior Center, VA Hospitals at Bay Pines and West Palm Beach and the Humane

Society. They also donated to the Veterans Advisory Board program to place a monument at each of the county cemeteries. The unit took part in the annual POW/MIA ceremony at the Sebring Circle, Pearl Harbor Day at the Medal of Honor Park, and Memorial Day services sponsored by the Veterans Council at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery.

CENTRAL COAST WINDS AND WAVES

Unit # 90 (CA) - Old Friends Keep In Touch--One of the nicest things about becoming a member of WAVES National are the deep friendships that develop and continue even after members have transferred to another unit or have to resign because of health reasons.  A conduit for our lasting friendships is the unit newsletter.  The Windjammer is the Central Coast Winds and Waves Unit #90 paper and it is being forwarded to the following members who have left us:  Carolyn Gorka, Louise Roberts, Ailene Alexander, and Mary Gaumer.

VOLUNTEER

Unit # 94 (TN) – At May’s meeting, Metro Nashville’s Acting Chief of Police, Deborah Y. Faulkner, EdD., told the unit about Metro’s role in “Homeland Security” and how the police force is making the community a safer place to live. She also reminded all ladies to be particularly watchful of their purses when in large parking lots and walking the malls.

SEA SHELLS

Unit #95 (FL) - In May, three of the unit’s officers drove over from the Treasure Coast to Clearwater, for the Region XII Conference. It was very informative and enjoyed by all. The unit meets once a month at local restaurants. The unit’s major contributions go to Navy women in need and SE Guide Dogs. A drive for recruits has begun since the unit is getting smaller.

FLATWATER WAVES

Unit #98 (NE) - The May meeting of the Flatwater WAVES was held in Beaver Crossing, Nebraska. Lorraine Chrastil, Decision Review Officer, U.S. Dept of Veterans Affairs in
