WIMSA pins to young women in the NAVY JROTC programs
who had demonstrated leadership, patriotism, and duty.
FINGER LAKES
Unit # 49 (NY) - The unit was busy over the holidays with making and
delivering gift bags for the women patients at Canandaigua VAMC and our
homebound members. The membership enjoyed gathering with family
members and friends at their annual Christmas luncheon. Some of the
membership participated in the annual VAVS Gift Wrap at the
Canandaigua VAMC. On January 30th, the unit attended the annual Four
Chaplain service at the B’rith Kodesh Temple. Comfort items are collected
at every meeting for the patients at the VAMC, as well as contributions of
nonperishable foods to the Canandaigua Veterans Club. The Finger
Lakes Unit is
a member of the Rochester Women’s Federation Club, where members attend
meetings, luncheons and make contributions on a regular basis.
NORTHWEST FLORIDA WAVES
Unit # 52 (FL) - Nine members participated in the Veterans Day Parade.
Four of the participants marched the parade route carrying the
American, Navy, Marine and Unit flags. 120 attended the annual All
Women Veterans Luncheon in November hosted by the Unit for the
sixth year. The theme was "Remembering the Korean Conflict". A
potluck Christmas party was held at American Legion Post #240
with 50 in attendance. There was a large variety of delicious
food, entertainment and prizes awarded to those dressed in holiday
attire. Many Christmas presents were collected for the abused
women and children of FavorHouse.
GULF COAST DOLPHINS
Unit # 56 (FL) – The unit celebrated its 15th anniversary in
July with a birthday cake. Many interesting speakers have
provided information and inspiration to the members. Members rode in
the |
Sarasota Veterans Day parade and also attended the All
Women Veterans luncheon in November.
SAND DOLLAR
Unit # 60 (FL) - After the summer hiatus, the newly elected
officers were installed for the year 2003 2004. On Nov. 1st, five
members enjoyed attending the Women Veterans Recognition Week
Luncheon sponsored by the Gulf Coast Unit #27. Several members
attended our annual Veterans Day Service held at Bay Pines Medical Center.
In Nov., Unit # 60 celebrated its 15th year as a unit of WN. December 3rd,
the unit Holiday Party was held in place of the monthly meeting. On Dec.
17th, members distributed ditty bags to the Women Veterans at Bay Pines
Hospital. Hope your holidays were happy, and we have PEACE IN THE NEW
YEAR.
ATLANTIC SHORE
Unit # 66 (FL) - The unit meeting was held on 15 November. A
report was made on the laying of a wreath on Veterans Day. Members were
informed that the dues were due. The Christmas party was held on the 6th
of December.
COLUMBIA RIVER RIPPLES
Unit #70 (OR) – Again this year we had a very successful Bazaar
and Lasagna feed, and we expect it to be even better next year. Member
Lorraine McCameron will have to start her baking earlier next year, as she
sold out of all of her wonderful breads and cakes in record time. The
Milwaukie American Legion Auxiliary decorated for the holidays, and served
the lunch that our own members had provided. Some of the unit members will
be attending the Remembering America’s Heroes Programs around the State,
with at least five planned for the coming year. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO
YOU ALL.
WAVES FORE & AFT
Unit #72 (OH) - At our Christmas luncheon we enjoyed having a
special guest with us. She has been in the regular Navy for 9 years. She
told of her duties this past year while stationed in Greece and of
her upcoming assignment on a carrier in the Pacific. So interesting to
hear what Navy duty is now compared to what it was for the WAVES in
WWII. |
SPACE COAST WAVES
Unit # 75 (FL) - The December luncheon meeting was held at the
Indian River Colony Club on 13 December with 58 Unit #75 members and
guests enjoying the Christmas theme meeting. One highlight of the meeting
was the distribution of the new yearbook “Getting to Know Us”. It contains
pictures and minibios of each of our 54 members. The mini-bios tell us a
bit about their time in service as well as something about their lives
since being in service. Another highlight - the very first male Honorary
Membership was awarded to Robert O. Bauer of Melbourne, FL. The Unit
recognized him for his dedicated service as the editor of our
monthly newsletter “The Space Coast Capsule” for the past several
years. We also collected a substantial amount of money and an
automobile full of clothing for needy people in the area.
REDWOOD EMPIRE WAVES
Unit # 77 (CA) – As a "Welcome Aboard" eight "new member"
packets were presented in 2003 and the unit starts 2004 with an
active member of the Merchant Marines who states "I don’t have a discharge
because I might get the bug to return to the sea". Our Honorary
Member, also on active duty, has graduated from Photography School and
will be stationed in San Diego. There was sunshine galore as the colors
were carried in the Veterans Day Parade and also for the members attending
the All Women Veterans Luncheon in Sacramento. A "Wish List" from
the WAVES residing at the Yountville Veterans Home was acknowledged with
gifts at the Christmas luncheon at the Four Points Sheraton. In
addition, there was an abundance of "Toys for Tots" donations.
VOLUNTEER
Unit # 94(TN) -The Unit participated in Middle Tennessee's
Operation Stand Down, 31 October - 02 November 2003, for 300
homeless veterans. This was our 11th year to prepare, bake, furnish, and
serve the desserts for the Saturday night supper for 300 men and women
