FIRST VICE PRESIDENT
Sharon Woods
It’s spring in Arizona, ladies, and it’s only February, and the poppies are beautiful. I have a front yard full of them, yellow, orange, and white in color. Of course you know I’m fudging a little because they actually don’t come out until the middle of February and it’s January 1st. But this is the time of year, in the desert, when the flowers start to bloom. I guess that’s why so many of you northeasterners or “Snowbirds” as we “Zonies” call you, come to visit.

I hope all of you had nice holidays and now it’s a new year and time to get back to work tracking down new members to join our ranks with WAVES National. Soooo… recruit, recruit, the more the merrier. I’ll have an update on the membership contest in April.

It’s also time to think about getting your eligible children to participate in our scholarship contests. It’s a helpful way to earn some extra money for college; it’s so expensive now to go to college, so every little bit helps.

And on the horizon is our convention in Philadelphia, of which I am sure looking forward to, since I’ve never been there before, I want to see the Liberty Bell for sure. So make plans to come join us, I know you’ll have a good time.

Until April, hope you all get through the rest of your cold winter and I’ll be thinking of you out here with my poppies.

SECOND VICE PRESIDENT
Ruby Homick

I must say that I enjoy reading the newsletters that I receive from units across the country, one in particular from the Green Mountain Girls Unit 113. Ginny Wilkinson had put in a story about her time in service and her bugle. It was so funny. A few more editors should do the same and write something about the members experiences while in service. I hope you have been practicing Ginny.

If you need information on Newspapers that you can put publicity in to get new members, go to your local library. Many of them have a program called Gateway, which has every paper in the country listed in it. It even has the throwaways that are found in local shopping centers. This is a good source

to find new members and even some old ones. Hang in there, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Remember, if you need copies of forms or information let me know, I will be glad to send them to you.

RECORDING SECRETARY
Winifred “Freddie”McBride

Ladies, I hope you and your families had a wonderful holiday season and that the New Year will be kind to all of you.

The newsletters keep coming in, and I  read each one before I pass them on for judging.  Unfortunately, the school that was going to critique them will not be able to do so due to cut backs, and a shortage of students who have the necessary experience. So, back to the drawing board. By the time you read this,  I will have contacted two professors at Portland State College, and am certain they will handle it for us. Keep them coming.

Please remember to use my PO BOX ADDRESS, as some are still being sent to the old address, and it takes an extra day to forward them.

TREASURER
Pat Childers

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Dues, dues, dues… by now hopefully everyone has paid their dues and all Unit Treasurer’s (UT) have forwarded unit dues to our Assistant Treasurer, Gloria Galati. I know this is a monumental task and appreciate the work involved. Many UT’s begin early reminding members of upcoming dues and it is important that dues be paid promptly so membership lists can be completed in a timely manner. Again, many thanks to the members who pay their dues promptly and the Unit Treasurer’s who submit the annual dues in a timely manner.

My holidays were saddened with the passing of Virginia (Ginny) Mattson, immediate past President of Piedmont Tarheels Unit #44 in December after a brief illness. Ginny is responsible for me being your National Treasurer; I sat next to her at one of the luncheon’s at the Cleveland convention. We struck up a conversation and a friendship and when I moved to North Carolina in 2001 I joined Ginny’s unit in Greensboro. As luck would have it, Ginny was on the nominating committee and with her encouragement I

successfully ran for the office of National Treasurer. I’m so happy that we sat together  at the November 1st Women Veteran’s Luncheon hosted by the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Her shipmates in Unit 44 will certainly miss Ginny. She was a wonderful mentor. I have made a donation to the WN Scholarship Fund in her memory.

ASSISTANT TREASURER
Gloria Galati

Hello to all WN Members: I hope everyone had a nice holiday season and that 2004 is filled with health and happiness for all members!

Please look at the first line of your white caps label. If the first two digits of your label show 03 your national annual dues are required. If your label shows MAL then all members-at-large should fill out the member-at-large form and send their national dues directly to me! If you are a member of a local WAVES National Unit then send your dues to your unit treasurer and she will forward your dues to me on a unit dues transmittal form. Please do not send your unit dues to me directly. This helps your unit treasurer to keep her records in order! Thank you for your assistance in this matter!

Also, please remember when sending new membership applications to national to fill in the “Referred By” line so the appropriate WN member can receive credit for the membership contest. Winners to be announced at the National Convention in August.

If you want to receive your White Caps faster please forward $3.00 per year with your WAVES National I.D. number and unit affiliation for first class postage to me and I will set up a first class postage account for you!

Until next issue thank you to all WN members for their cooperation and assistance. And as usual, Anchors Aweigh!
