continued… at our VA Medical Centers. There are 162 VA Medical Centers. WAVES National is required to maintain Representatives and Deputy Representatives in 30 of these Centers in order to remain on the National VAVS Committee with voting rights. As your NAC Representative and National Certifying Officer, I receive the minutes / attendance reports from the VA Medical Centers where WN had certified representatives for FY2003. I still have not received the fourth quarter minutes from several Centers. Therefore, for reporting this year, I am going to recognize the 75% attendees as well as our ladies who attended 100% of their meetings. Twelve Centers reported having 100% attendance for some; ten Centers reported having 75% attendance; eight Centers reported 25-50% attendance; six Centers reported ZERO attendance for FY2003. 100% Attendance: Albuquerque, NM - Elizabeth (Betty) Hanson, Rep. Units having members who had ZERO
attendance must find a way for these ladies
to attend. However, if they can no longer
attend, their units must nominate new members
to be Representative or Deputy Representative
and then notify your National
Certifying Officer. Then your National Certifying
Officer will notify the VA Medical
Center of new appointments.
This is critical in order for WAVES
National to maintain membership in 30 VA
Medical Centers. For those who missed all
meetings and those who missed three consecutive
meetings, I will be writing your
State Director to contact you to see if you
will be able to improve your attendance and
be re-certified for FY2004.
Just remember, by being a member of
the VAVS Committee, you are briefed by the
administrative and medical staff as to the status
of their Centers healthcare programs for
male and female veterans. Status of female
healthcare is of utmost importance to WN.
WAVES National wishes to thank each
volunteer for your faithful attendance and
support by your units of the programs for
veterans at each Medical Center. “Veterans
Helping Veterans” is our goal!
During FY 2004, May God Bless each
of you and WAVES National! DEPUTY VAVS REP. Hello Ladies! Well, here we are another year, where does the time go? By now we have all heard the final decision on the closing of some of the VA Medical facilities across the United States. I sat in on the CARES Committee hearing that took place at Canandaigua, NY. It was very interesting. It truly showed that the committee didn’t know anything other than what was submitted to them. Some of the facts and figures were not accurate. The committee took a tour of the facility, talked to staff, patients, family members, politicians, and organization reps. Our facility had a very strong backing from our local and state politicians, community, patients, their family members, and organizations and media. We put up a good fight. On to another subject, as you keep hearing us remind you, we still need people to come forward and become a VAVS Representative and/or Deputy at the facilities in their area for WAVES National. We lose people all the time due to health conditions and deaths, and we need to replace these people in order to continue with our national status. Please give this serious thought and contact Harriett if you are interested. Remember to send a Valentine for Valentine’s Day to the troops and the veteran patients. A lot of our veterans are also in nursing homes; check those in your community. |
Don’t forget to have your military history recorded in the Library of
Congress’s Veteran’s History Project.
Ideally, each unit should have a Volunteer Services Chairperson. Each unit member would send her hours to the chairperson by mid May (you might have to estimate May hours). The Unit Volunteer Services Chairperson then tabulates the unit hours (Community hours are separate from VA hours) and mails to me, the National Volunteer Chairperson not later than 15 June of each year. Only MALs would send their individual hours directly to me. If you need a volunteer form you may request one from your unit or send for one from me.
I have been receiving literature in the mail, phone calls and e-mails from various venues and Chambers of Commerce... all of them wanting us to bring our WN convention to their area in 2006. If your unit/region hasn't quite decided whether to make a bid, an excellent place to start is by contacting your area Chamber of Commerce. All bids should be in my hands no later than July 15th.
Hope you had a terrific holiday season and that your New Year will be better than you could ever imagine! If you don’t find your article in the Foam off the WAVES, please let me know. I’ve received a few with no identifying unit name, number, or state. I’m not much of a psychic so I would appreciate it if you would identify your unit… that goes for both e-mails and postal mail (snail mail). Remember, the next deadline is 1 March.
