A LITTLE OF THIS AND THAT
Dassa Carvey - WAVES National Public Relations Chairman

Relocating?
Moving locally is one thing, but when a member moves out of town (or state) and doesn’t notify her unit, she has a lot  to lose. She loses the contact with friends she has made. She  loses the camaraderie of socializing with others who share her  experiences. She loses her most valued support group.

I had a member move to NY State. When I learned of  her new address, I contacted a local unit there and asked the  president of that unit to get in touch with her and invite her to a meeting. Now, they are the best of friends. More  importantly, my former member has new friends and can  stay in contact with her WAVE friends.

If you move, please contact your local unit and get the name of a unit near where you will be relocating. It’s not only important to you, but it keeps you in the WAVES National family.

Answering Requests for Information
I want to thank each and every one of you who have responded to my inquiries for information. You are a wealth of information and I have learned a lot from you.

Nadine Willis, a British author, requested WWII members complete a questionnaire and return to her for a book she is writing. Several of you responded and Nadine has promised to send me a copy of her book, once published.

Some of the respondees included:

Lois Chalmers . . . . . . . . Miami Lakes, Florida
Pat (O'Brien) Holcombe . . . Alabama Gulf Coast
Alice Hart Johnson . . . . . . Brunswick, ME
Elizabeth Merring Overton . . Birmingham, AL
Pauline (Normand) Paul . . . Saco, ME

Lois took up flying after the war and became a flying instructor.

Pat told two stories, one about her and her colleagues  sending out lots of make up to a young girl based in the UK, and another story about her and another WAVE who accepted a dinner invitation aboard a ship without consulting their  CO first. They both ended up in trouble!

Alice told me a story about traveling to Boot Camp aboard a Pullman train. She and another WAVE decided to travel in the caboose at the rear, which was uncoupled before  they actually arrived at the Boot Camp. She says they could  have been AWOL before they even started!

Elizabeth told a story about being caught cuddling her  future husband by Shore Patrol with the lights off! Very  amusing! (H-m-m-m-m! I would like to hear more about  this one)!

Pauline didn't have any stories to tell, but her husband  has now put me in touch with his English cousin who is the  Director of the WRA. Nadine is hoping that she may be able  to put her in touch with some UK based lady veterans.

Nadine said: "I do not have a publishing date at the moment, the book isn't finished yet. I still have some more  research to do and many more photographs to take. I'm hoping  it will be finished by next summer, and then I will be  searching for a publisher. I have one possible at the moment.  Once I have a publisher, I can then contact you with details  on how to obtain copies and prices."

One of the ladies in my unit is an associate member and  was a WREN during WWII.  She has also responded to the  questionnaire and I hope her stories will also appear in the  book. Once I have more information from Nadine, I will  pass it on to you. And, please, keep those stories coming!

Convention 2004 News

Unit Pictures
Thursday's luncheon at convention 2004 will honor the State Dir. and Unit Pres. We would like to show off all the units during the luncheon by doing a picture show. To make this happen, we need your help NOW. Please send a photograph of your unit to: Denise Duke, 9402 Flowerden Lane, Manassas, VA 20110-6636.  Please do not send anything larger than 4 x 6 inches. Write the Unit # and name and date picture was taken on the back of the picture.  Photos will not be returned but instead given to the WN Historian.

Ride the River Link Ferry
The Ferry connects two cities and two states. On the Philadelphia side at  the Independence Seaport Museum you can explore Admiral Dewey's 1892  Olympia, tour the WW II submarine Becuma, and enjoy the Galleries and  exhibits. Board the River Link Ferry and cross to the Camden, NJ waterfront.  Here you can see and tour a floating museum - the Battleship New Jersey, the  U.S. Navy's most decorated ship, touch a shark at the New Jersey State  Aquarium and visit Camden’s Children’s Garden. All this via round trip on  the River Link Ferry. It can be a day adventure for the whole family. Come and enjoy August 2004!
